The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a venomous species of lizard that inhabits the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang in Indonesia. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2 to 3 metres (6.6 to 9.8 ft) and weighing around 70 kilograms (150 lb). As a result of their size, these lizards dominate the ecosystems in which they live. Although Komodo dragons eat mostly carrion, they will also hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals. (Wikipedia)

Not naturally venomous; their saliva is so full of harmful bacteria from eating carrion that it will kill live prey.

Their method of hunting is to bite an animal, then follow it until it dies from blood poisoning.

They also eat people; same method.

(wikipedia is not always right; in this case, it's very far off the mark)

Actually they only rarely eat people. Most of the time they just leave them. There was a little boy killed when he was playing, but he was squatting and the komodo saw him as a pray. Same thing happend when a guy fell out of a tree. He looked like a pray.
And I know that there was a man who woke up because a komodo was nibbling his toes! The doctors think the komodo was searching for food and the man had stinky socks. So they guess that his socks smelled like rotting pray, what's normal food for a komodo.

Important lesson: Always wash your socks. :P

I love the photograph, the colours are great and the leaves around the edges focus ones eyes on the komodo dragon. Great job!
